EFI Frequently Asked Questions

What fuel pump is required?

A high pressure pump capable of 60 PSI is required. For gasoline, the Aeromotive A1000 is good for 1000 HP NA. For Alky, you need a belt drive pump. Fuel pump choice is critical to the success of an EFI system, so consult with us before purchasing.

How do I know what injectors to buy?

We choose the injector size based on your Dyno or target horse power, NA or power adder, and fuel type (alky takes twice the volume).

Do you use the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor on drag race systems?

Most race systems do not use IAC. This is mainly because it is un needed expense. We don't run these cars on the street and drive them at 20 degrees.

Can I modify my manifold for EFI?

Yes, we sell rail and bung kits. It does require a mill and tig welding. We can perform this for you. Check the price page.

What size are the throttle bodies?

We offer a variety of TB sizes up to 2200 CFM based on engine requirements.

Is it true that I could use an old carb body to make my own throttle body?

Yes - BUT. you need to modify the body. If you buy a system from us, we will give you some pointers.

Is initial start difficult?

With gasoline and an electric pump, it starts & runs cold or warm like your new street car.

Some racers experience starting problems with alky and the belt drive pump. Frequently this can be resolved with re-routing the lines,. Sometimes a small electric primer pump is required.

Does it use an O2 sensor?

Yes the FAST system is designed to use the wide band oxygen sensor to adjust the amount of fuel to your target A/F ratio based on the A/F seen by the O2 sensor - this is closed loop. In open loop your actual A/F can be data logged for your review later.

Can I run Open Loop.

Yes, you can select Open Loop or Closed Loop.

I use closed loop to tune my combination. Say I want to try more fuel below 6800 RPM to make the car run harder for the first 100 feet. I simply change my target A/F ratio from 12.8 to 12.7 in the desired RPM cells and make a run.

I also have use closed loop when using Nitrous - just to be safe.

An key tuning tool is reviewing the actual A/F ratio at every point on the track on you laptop or the FAST data logger.

Is there a Data Logger capability?

Yes, you can log to your laptop (rather difficult with a dragster, but I have done it!). Or you an purchase the optional FAST logger which is much easier. In either case you can review the run in detail including the outputs of all sensors results (IE actual Air/Fuel ratio). You can also export to a text file for import into Microsoft Excel or any other software.

What other sensors are used?

MAP for the barometric pressure.

Water temp.

Air inlet temp.

In a drag racing situation, FAST does not change much based on these. However you can modify all but the MAP. I have used the Coolant temp correction to speed up the warm up with Alky. It used way less fuel.

What about alky maintenance?

IF YOU RUN ALKY, YOU MUST USE ALKY WITH NO LUBE.

OK, we have a two part answer. If you have run alky before, then you have your own view on storage, filtering, contamination, purity etc. If you have not, talk to the alky racers in your area and get their input.

With the exception of the lube caution mentioned above EFI has no different requirements with Alky.

Here is what we do: We have run alky (Rupert carbs) for about 10 years before switching to EFI. We do not do any kind of maintenance on a week to week basis. At the end of the race season we simply load a different fuel table into the FAST system and start the car up on gas (with the carb we switched to a gas unit). It is warmed up and then just sits until race season when we put alky back in the tank and go racing.
